bye bye Typo

Like so many others, I’ve gotten fed up with Typo. After much frustration, I’ve given up waiting for the application to become stable. I’m not sure if it was only because I was hosting on Dreamhost, but I suspect that they were at least partially to blame for the constant crashing. So, to make my life easier I’ve moved on to Wordpress. Unfortunately I’ve lost all the comments to my Typo posts. However I have been able to import my old blogger blog, and some of my old Livejournal posts.

Vote for mongrel support on Dreamhost

Thanks to Chris for posting a comment directing me to Dreamhost’s suggestion voting forum. For those of you with Dreamhost packages, please take the time to go and vote for mongrel support.

Mongrel is fast becoming the favorite Rails webserver and will eventually replace WEBRick as the default server. It was recently added as the default option when running script/server (edge). It is far more reliable and faster than either fastcgi or fcgi. So get out there and VOTE!

fcgi + Rails + apache + Dreamhost (update)

So I finally figured out what was breaking Typo. I was using the latest trunk from Typo because the stable released version is so far behind the current dev version. I was also using a theme that was designed for stable release. As a result the theme broke Typo. So I took the out of the box layout from the default theme and the stylesheet from the theme I wanted. Amazingly enough, it is almost identical to the old theme and with a couple of minor changes to the layout, it is close enough.

Looks like it isn’t Dreamhost’s fault after all. Still the desire for mongrel support is there. If I find a competitive hosting package that has mongrel support I’ll probably make the switch.

fcgi + Rails + apache + Dreamhost

= not the most ideal Rails hosting envorinment. I’ve been fighting with the dreaded 500 error for the past day. I’ve made some changes and hopefully this will rectify the problem. Thankfully I found a coupon for Dreamhost that waived the initial setup fee, so I can comfortably look for better hosting without the worry that I out $50. Hopefully I can find a place that offers mongrel support and doesn’t break the bank for decent diskspace & bandwidth needs.
